Choose a manageable outing

A short daytime ride can be easier to fit around meals and rest. A day houseboat may appeal if an onboard meal and more room are priorities. Overnight adds a sleeping arrangement and a moored evening to consider.

These are planning considerations, not safety guarantees. Individual boats, crews and departure points differ. Check the actual product’s minimum age and requirements for your child before booking.

Ask about the exact vessel

Request clear answers from the provider for your travel date. Do not rely on a generic promotional photograph.

• Are children of your child’s age accepted?
• Are correctly sized life jackets available for each child, and what is the wearing policy?
• What are the boarding steps, gaps, railings and open edges like?
• Is there a usable toilet, shade and protection from rain?
• Can a stroller be brought aboard, and will it need to be lifted?
• For overnight trips, what is the cabin and bed arrangement?
• Can meals accommodate the dietary requirements you explain to the provider?

Accessibility needs a specific answer

Most of the checked booking listings state that they are not wheelchair accessible. A roomy-looking boat is not evidence of step-free boarding or a suitable bathroom.

If anyone in your party has mobility or other access needs, ask about the exact vessel, jetty, steps, walking surfaces, toilet and assistance arrangements. Only the provider can confirm what it can accommodate for your selected departure.

Understand what certification does and does not show

Kerala Tourism publishes houseboat classification standards covering matters including vessel identification, passenger limits, safety equipment, rails and route or night-halt information. Classification is separate from the operating licence.

We have not inspected individual vessels or verified their licences or certificates. Ask the provider about the current documents for the boat you will actually use, and follow crew instructions and current local guidance.
