North Kerala: choose the coast or add the hills

Start with a coastal base

Bekal and Kanhangad suit the Kasaragod coast; Kannur and Thalassery bring maritime history, handloom and Malabar food into the trip. Kozhikode provides another city base for the waterfront, food streets, Kappad and Beypore. Choose which part of the coast you want to explore before treating these as one outing.

Airport arrival does not establish your sightseeing base. Calicut airport is in Malappuram, while Kannur airport is at Mattannur. Confirm where you will stay and arrange the onward connection separately.

Give Wayanad its own base

Wayanad has no railway station within the district, so the road approach matters. Kalpetta, Sulthan Bathery and Mananthavady serve different areas. Edakkal, Pookode, plantation landscapes and forest visits should not be treated as neighbouring stops.

Muthanga and Tholpetty are separate sanctuary sections. Choose the intended area and check the current authorised programme, entry arrangements and closures. A wildlife visit does not guarantee a sighting. Ranipuram, in Kasaragod, is another distinct inland hill excursion.

Choose a Malappuram branch

Nilambur’s teak and forest heritage is a different branch from Tirur and Ponnani’s coastal, river and religious heritage. Pick the branch that fits your base instead of trying to collect every highlight in a short visit. Check the current Forest Department arrangements for forest destinations such as Conolly’s Plot and Nedumkayam.

Plan encounters around real schedules

Theyyam is a sacred ritual with shrine-specific dates, not a performance available every day. Reconfirm dates locally and follow the community’s guidance on participation and photography.

Beypore’s Uru construction depends on active work and orders. Ask what can actually be visited before making it the reason for a journey. Allow food and craft visits to reflect the people and businesses involved rather than promising a guaranteed demonstration.
