Day cruise or overnight houseboat?

Choose a day trip when the boat is one part of your visit

A day houseboat gives you time to settle aboard, eat a meal if included, and watch the backwaters without moving your overnight luggage. A shikara or canoe can be a better fit when you want a smaller craft or a shorter outing.

If you are starting in Kochi, compare the whole door-to-door itinerary. A full-day label often includes several hours on the road. If you are already in Alleppey, a local departure leaves more of your available time for the water.

Choose overnight when staying aboard is the point

An overnight houseboat adds a cabin and a moored evening to your trip. It needs space in your itinerary for boarding on one day and checkout on the next. It does not mean cruising all night.

Check the exact cabin, private bathroom, meal arrangements, mooring schedule and air-conditioning hours. Those details belong to the selected product and can differ between boats.

Compare these details before paying

Use the selected booking option rather than its headline alone. These questions make two apparently similar offers easier to compare.

• How long is the trip door to door, and how much time is actually spent cruising?
• Where exactly do you board, and is transport included from your address?
• Is the boat private to your party? Are cabins private if the boat is shared?
• Which meals, drinks, taxes and transfers are included?
• What are the cabin air-conditioning hours, mooring times and checkout time?
• What happens if weather or an itinerary change affects the trip? Read the actual cancellation terms.

Choose overnight only if you want the stay itself and can allow the following day. Choose a day trip if you prefer to return to your hotel.
